Chapter 13

Molly shivered with cold. She was wearing cotton pants and a silk tunic provided by Savitri. Over it she wore a quilted cotton jacket. None of these items kept her warm. As she snuggled next to Magnus in an attempt to absorb his heat, she saw a blizzard through the open door of the truck as it bounced and swayed over the rutted track. Snow fell in thick white sheets against a black background.

A tiny face stared up at her from inside her jacket. It was a mongoose. She’d felt its presence in the courtyard in Saidpur and it had heard her. When she woke up, the furry body was pressed close to hers. It wiggled its black nose now and she heard a question in its mind.

“I don’t know where we’re going, little one. Stay out of sight.”

The mongoose ducked back into her jacket and curled up on her lap to sleep.

They were high in the mountains. It had started to snow on her last bathroom break. Howler drove and Denzell sat on boxes of rock-climbing equipment to watch them. Three other Lykens, Blue Duck, Butcho and Caveman were in the cab with Howler. They’d left Russell to guard the jet.

“This storm is bad,” Denzell growled.

Magnus spoke in a soothing tone. “You need to get them to stop. It’s almost dark. There are many cliffs and dangerous ravines they could drive into in this storm. Bang on the partition and tell them to stop.”

Denzell violently shook his head. “Shut yer pie hole. Howler told me you could use your voice to control me. Put a sock in it or I’ll close it for you.”

“He’s right, Denzell,” Molly said. “It’s getting dark. They could drive us right over a cliff.”

Denzell shoved his head out of the truck. He wore a heavy down parka with wolverine fur around the hood. When he pulled his head back into the truck, it was covered with snow. He stumbled to the partition, falling down once when the truck bounced over a huge bump, and banged on the wall separating them from the cab. “Hey, can you guys see where yer going?”

“Howler can see perfectly. Shut up, we’re almost to the monastery.”

Molly slumped against Magnus and sighed. At least they’d tried. Fifteen minutes later, the truck stopped. Molly saw a huge, rambling, shadowy structure with lights glowing from dark windows.

“Have you ever been here before?” she asked Magnus.

He shook his head. “Not here, but close by. I know these monks. They guard the secret of my brother with their lives.”

“If you ask, will they tell you where he is?”

Magnus nodded slowly.

“Will you ask?”

He nodded again. “To save your life, I would do anything.”

Howler and his crew dragged Magnus out of the back of the truck and Molly followed. Her little friend stretched out and rode in her sleeve with his head on her shoulder. Wearing nothing on her feet but a pair of sandals, she tripped and stumbled over rocks and boulders jutting from the primitive road as they headed onto a path leading to the lighted building.
